Benbecula Airport (BEB)
Airport Information
(Benbecula, Western Isles, Scotland)
The tiny Benbecula Airport (BEB) is the gateway to the rugged and beautiful Scottish Hebrides Islands. This compact yet attractive terminal is serviced by a handful of regional airlines, including British Airways and Highlands Air, which operate flights to three scheduled destinations - Glasgow, Stornoway and Barra. More than 35,000 passengers pass through Benbecula Airport every year, on their way to explore the remote islands in the north of Scotland.
Benbecula Airport is situated at the north-western corner of the island and to the west of mainland Scotland, being next to the villages of Balivanich, Dunganachy and Uachdar, and just across the water from Sunamul Island. Nearby are a series of roadside shrines, the headquarters of the Ministry of Defence, and also a notable RAF base.

The airport can be reached by car via the A865 motorway, which runs the entire length of the Hebrides Islands. Drivers should turn onto the island's B892 road, which will lead them directly to Benbecula Airport. There is also a daily bus service, which travels to and from the airport and is run by Hebridian Coaches. However, there are no rail services on this area of Scotland, although limited ferry services do operate from the connected island of South Uist, sailing to the mainland's seaside town of Oban.
c Airport (BEB) Information: History and Facilities
Aircraft have flown around the Western Isles and to Benbecula in particular since the latter part of the 1930s. In the early 1940s, the Royal Air Force established an airbase on the island and post-war, this airfield became known as Benbecula Airport, connecting this small island to Scotland and other parts of the UK. Today, Benbecula Airport (BEB) is owned and managed by Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd, which are also responsible for the operation of a further nine airports around Scotland.
Facilities at the airport are very limited, but do include a cafeteria, where a selection of snacks, drinks and small meals can be purchased. The terminal does also contain a few shops offering basic necessities, including a newsagent. However, there is currently no duty-free shopping available.
Benbecula Airport does not have an ATM, bank or any other business facilities, so passengers should ensure they are prepared before arrival. For those with cars, the airport offers both short-term and long-term parking in its single parking lot.
Benbecula Airport (BEB) Information: About Benbecula Tourism
Located in the town, an army base is the main source of its population and in general there's not much to see here. However, it has a garage, café, bank and a general store. Borve Castle is the one historical site of note. Built in the 14th century, it was the tower house of the original clan who ruled this area.
Due to its central location among the Hebrides Islands, on the western side of the Isle of Sky, Benbecula Island is an ideal base from which to explore the North and South Uist. Benbecula Airport (BEB) is a popular way to reach the island and of great importance to the local community. Nearby you will encounter some lovely stretches of beach, but most of the activity is based within the village Balivanich, the administrative centre.
